Devon Rex

Description

The Devon Rex is noted for its soft, short, naturally curly coat. Its large eyes and ears give it a pixie-ish appearance.

They are available in a wide variety of patterns and colors.

The Devon Rex is a potential choice for a minority of people who are allergic to cats. While no naturally bred cat can be truly hypoallergenic, Devon Rex (and Cornish Rex) do not aggravate allergies in some people with cat allergies. Allergic people are encouraged to visit a breeder to determine their own tolerance for the Cat Breeds.

Personality

Devons have been compared to pixies, elves, and, of course, space aliens for their jumbo-sized satellite-dish ears, large, mischievous ‘window-to-the-soul’ eyes, and ethereal appearance. Fanciers laud the ‘poodle cat‘ (as the Cat Breeds is affectionately called), as people-oriented snugglers that love nothing better than to cuddle up with you at night and wake you in the morning with hugs, kisses and purrs of affection. And since the Devon sheds less than other Cat Breeds, you can snuggle back without fear of covering yourself in cat hair.

But there’s lots of other reasons to acquire a Devon besides their coats: their loyalty, devotion, playfulness, courage, and intelligence, just to name a few of the qualities that make them a good choice for the cat-obsessed. Devons are shoulder perchers, lap sitters, tail waggers, and retrievers of tossed cat toys. They have a well-developed sense of curiosity and want to be involved in whatever you’re doing, whether it’s peeling potatoes for dinner or showering for a Saturday night date.

History

The Devon Rex is a young Cat Breeds, only some 30 years old. It derives its name from the town in which it was first developed, namely Devon in southwest England. ‘Rex’ is a term used to indicate a mutation in the coat; rather than being straight and soft, the coat of a rex cat is curly, or wavy. Reports suggest that in 1960 a kitten was born with a rex mutation. This kitten subsequently grew up, produced another rex kitten, and further in-breeding and breeding with other short-haired cats soon created the ‘Devon Rex‘.

The first Devon Rex arrived in Australia in 1971. Its playful temperament and attractive appearance has since endeared it to many cat lovers.

Appearance

Pixie like in appearance, the Devon Rex is a small to medium sized cat. It’s body is muscular, with hind legs longer than the forelegs. It has modified wedge shaped head with large eyes, broad cheekbones, strong chin and a short muzzle. The ears large and low set.

The coat is short, soft and curly. It contains all three types of hair guard, awn and down. Whiskers and eyebrows are short & crinkled.

Breeders

If you are looking for a Devon Rex as a breeding cat, we work with a small number of active catteries and we do not often sell a cat with breeding rights. Typically, breeding quality kittens are retained in our own breeding program.
